As well as providing automated marking of structured exercises, like quizzes and assessments, Calibrae LMS now also enables automated marking and grading of unstructured, blank-page exercises through AI marking and AI mark-assist. In this article we'll look how AI can be used to automatically grade work and provide meaningful learner feedback. We'll also see how AI mark-assist can boost instructor productivity, helping speed up personal marking, assessment and feedback.
AI marked assignments
Assignments are exercises in which learners are instructed to do something and submit a response for assessment. For example, a piece of journalistic writing, a summary of a document or a business plan.

Personal, individual marking and grading of written assignments is resource intensive, requiring time and effort from instructors or teachers. Calibrae LMS now offers AI marking for automated review and grading of submitted assignments, and AI mark assist to assist instructors in the personal, individual marking process.
AI Marking
For fully automated marking, assignments are set as AI marked. A pass mark completion threshold, along with any specific marking criteria defined in the marking rubric, is then used by Calibrae AI to review and grade submitted assignment responses.

It then also compares the awarded grade to the set pass mark, and if appropriate, awards the learner successful completion of the assignment.

Meaningful feedback is then sent to the learner through Calibrae's built in messaging service. The learner is notified directly of the awarded grade and can immediately review the assignment submission feedback.

If the awarded score does not meet the completion requirements, the exercise remains incomplete and the learner is given feedback on how and what to improve for the next attempt.
AI assisted marking
Instructors can also benefit from Calibrae's AI mark assist to save time when marking and to boost productivity. With assignments set as Instructor marked, when viewing a submission, instructors have the option of selecting Suggest an AI mark. Calibrae AI then reviews the work against set marking criteria, suggests a proposed grade, and drafts relevant feedback. It also suggests whether or not the assignment should be marked as complete.

With AI assist, the proposed grade, the feedback and the completion state are just suggestions. The instructor typically reviews and may edit the proposals before finalising the mark and sending feedback to the learner.
Evaluating AI marking with AI scratch pad
Calibrae LMS provides instructors with a scratch pad through which they can familiarise themselves and feel confident with how Calibrae's AI uses assignment instructions and marking criteria to assess different examples of submitted work.

The scratch pad helps instructors get a feel for how awards are given and how feedback is constructed.
